Asset Custodian

In accordance with Louisiana state property control guidelines, university asset custodians are responsible for the accountability, control, and proper stewardship of movable property assigned to their department. Custodians serve as the departmental point of contact and are responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable state and university policies.

Responsibilities include:

  • Safeguarding movable property (assets) against loss, theft, misuse, or damage
  • Maintaining accurate, up-to-date, complete asset records, including location, condition, responsible user, serial numbers, etc.
  • Participating in and certifying periodic physical inventory in accordance with state requirements
  • Promptly reporting all changes in asset status, including transfers, relocations, disposals, or unlocated missing items
  • Ensuring asset identification tags are affixed, legible, and properly associated with each item
  • Providing explanations and supporting documentation for unlocated or missing assets, as required by state regulations
  • Promptly communicate any discrepancies to Property Control

Asset custodians are expected to exercise due diligence in the management of state property and to cooperate with Property Control to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with Louisiana Property Assistance Agency (LPAA) requirements.


Assets (non-consumable movable property) include, but are not limited to:
(e.g., computers, office furniture, printers, lab equipment, phones,  etc.)
